RetroPie gamepad setup

I have raspberry pi 3 b+.
I’m running RetroPie
The game pass will not work. I have tried every single one. It won’t allow me to complete setting them up because it continues to ask for buttons I do not have. I was told to try using a keyboard as well, which also does not work.
I wish there was a customer service phone number for someone to walk me through this.
If someone would be kind enough to call me, I would appreciate it, but I’m sure that’s not the case.
I have watched every fucking YouTube video, read forums, etc, and can’t find a solution. I’m really annoyed.
Any help is appreciated.

@nicklanier do you mean when setting up the controller buttons on Emulationstation you do not know how to skip each button that you do not have (say for example when it asks for thumbstixk directions when your controller has no thumbsticks)?
I assume you have been holding down any button on the controller for a couple of seconds or so to skip each setting you want to skip, as it tells you to on screen?

Yes!!! Thank you lol. I hold down any button and it won’t skip, it instead says “already assigned.” Or something like that. I’m away from the console now.

I see a pattern here, maybe there's something wrong with the current version of Emulation Station?

Someone showed me a different way. Instead of holding ONE button you hold TWO and it will skip.
