Anyone know what this 1981 Atari vector game requires in terms of an emulator to run? Thanks
It just closes with mame 2003

Just tried it, and redbaron.zip works for me under lr-mame2003-plus.

Make sure you have the proper ROMset for MAME-2003 for the game - when the emulator 'just closes', it's just a symptom of wrong ROMset.
The ROMset versions needed for each arcade emulator are detailed in https://retropie.org.uk/docs/MAME/.
