Wireless keyboard not working

I installed retropie on top of raspbian by following the manual installation instructions. I can launch emulation station from the console, but I get a screen saying 'Welcome, no Gamepad detected'. I try pressing buttons on my keyboard (including F4) but nothing works. It doesn't respond to my keyboard. How do I get past the welcome screen?

If it's a fresh installation, you'll probably need to use a USB keyboard first to get initial settings like bluetooth up and running.

If it's a bluetooth keyboard it will need configuring with another keyboard as @briankross has mentioned. If it's a 2.4ghz wireless keyboard with own dongle it should just work.
