        @TommyZ

        L1 Y X R1
        L2 B A R2

        start = start
        select = select
        hotkey = select
        R3 = right analog stick button
        L3 = left "" "" ""

        that will map nicely for fighting games on FBN. you may find you need to adjust a core option in mame2003 (i think it's called: controller layout = modern, or something like that).

            I configured mine a little differently

            Y X L1 L2
            B A R1 R2

            to have the main buttons at the leftmost edge of the group. I think this needs to be set to "6-button" or "8-button" in mame2003(-plus). I'm not at home at the moment, so I can't look it up.

            As a nice bonus, since L1+R1 will map to "PageUp" and "PageDown" in Emulation Station, my layout has them above each other accordingly.

            Just to offer a different option for this question. ;)

              @Clyde if you look at the button labels for OP's example, i think your layout would just add confusion.

                @dankcushions I admit that didn't take a closer look at them, and I tend to ignore such labels myself, since they reflect the manufacturer's preferences, not mine. Thanks for pointing this out.
