I wonder if anyone has any tips for getting the best PSP experience on a Pi 4? Any overclocking, emulator optimisation or other suggestions. Also which games work well and which don't.

I'm running PPSSPP on an over clocked 4GB Pi 4 (CPU 2,000, Core, 550, V3D 800). I find that 2x resolution is necessary to get a reasonable looking picture on a large modern TV. I don't think that the CPU overclock is actually benefiting PSP emulation but I keep it on for PS1 emulation.

      Currently running:
Retropie 4.8.9 on a Pi Zero 2W (Overclock Settings: CPU 1400Mhz)
      ES-DE on a GMKtec K6 (Windows 11, 32GB RAM)

This will cause a big performance hit for most 3d intensive games. If you're getting poor performance on a certain game, switch back to 1x (You can save per game configs).

Leave buffered rendering on and turn on auto-frame skip with a skip value of 3. This is the best you can do for now, most games are 60fps naturally so can handle some frameskip if needed without being too obvious.

Vulkan drivers are being worked on for the pi4 as we speak. ppsspp can take advantage of this and potentially/hopefully will increase performance in the future.

Yes I think it will depend on the game, some games, e.g. Medieval run fine with 2x graphics, others less so.

I will experiment with frame buffering 3, some games seem ok with it on but others not so much.

@George-Spiggott just make sure that auto-frame skip is on that way it will only skip if needed. And yes you are right many 2d games run fine with enhanced resolution and even some 3d games as well. I have Castlevania, me and my katamari, vice city stories, and quite a few PSP mini titles running at 2x with no problem.

Yeah, Castlevania and Little big Planet were playable on my Pi3, they were both good candidates for upscaling.

So I found that changing the video mode in the runcommand menu from 1080p to 720p increased performance a little bit. I tested god of war and got about a 2 fps bump. You can go as low as 640x480 for about a 3 fps bump, but the aspect ratio is wrong so I dont recommend it.

@quicksilver Thanks. I have given that a try. Wipeout runs at full 60fps (so long as you don't cause any explosions) for the whole track. Medieval runs at full speed with 3x resolution (approx 800p).

It does muck up the ppsspp menus a bit but this is a minor problem. With that in mind does anyone know why lr-ppsspp runs slower than ppsspp?

I will also experiment with this on the N64.

@George-Spiggott retroarch seems to have a performance impact on most emulators compared with their standalone counterparts. It's the same with mupen64plus. Retroarch must have some additional overhead or something.

My vanilla Pi 4B 1 GB runs PSP games great. No overclock or anything. lr-ppsspp is a bit slow though.

I've been playing GTA: Vice City Stories with this seup in 3x and 1:1 resolution where it plays fairly smoothly. Does anyone know the resolution of 1:1?

480x272 is native PSP resolution, so I would assume that's what it is.

That is 1x in ppsspp. 1:1 seems to be higher res, maybe HD but I can't tell exactly.

@George-Spiggott maybe the native resolution of your display, or current display mode.

Since I now have the official release (4.6) and new overclock settings (v3d @ 850) I have gone back to experimenting with PSP settings. I'm currently running Lr-PPSSPP without the modified video mode. I'm getting reasonable results that seem comparable to PPSSPP. I was able to reduce Audio Latency (ms) to 512 (this is not modifiable in PPSSPP AFAIK) which helps with the sound breaks/crackling when the game slows down.

Medieval - Resurrection runs in 1080p (PSP resolution x4) without fault if you're prepared to put up with some fairly heavy breaks in the sound during the intros or 544p (PSP resolution x2) if you're not. Tomb Raider - Anniversary seems no slower in 544p than it was in PPSSPP but with smoother audio. Grand Theft Auto - Vice/Liberty City Stories both seem fine in 544p.

                                  Currently running:
Retropie 4.8.9 on a Pi Zero 2W (Overclock Settings: CPU 1400Mhz)

Has anyone managed to get any noticeable increase in performance since installing the new v5.4 kernel? I think there are definitely incremental improvements to both kernel and emulator that have allowed me to reduce my reliance on frame skip.

I did notice that PPSSPP's smoothing seems to have very little overhead and can be used in a few games.

Simply changing "lower resolution for effects" from off to agressive, causes 99% of the games to run full speed while looking wonderfull at 2x resolution without overclocking.
