Looking for How to Load ROMs with Emulation Station on Ubuntu
-
Hello,
As the topic alludes to, I've been able to get everything installed on my Ubuntu device as far as RetroPie/Emulation Station goes. However I have no idea how to add ROMs and get Emulation Station to see them. The only real instructions I've been able to find are here: https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/Running-ROMs-from-a-USB-drive
Following those hasn't gotten me anywhere. I tried creating the folder "retropie-mount" but nothing happens, and the instructions do call out a Pi by name which I'm not using. Are there instructions for how to add ROMs via USB Drive for Ubuntu? I tried searching on here and around online but I haven't found anything that works or even anything that really calls out using a non-Pi device.

What's an 'Ubuntu device' ? If you have a PC with Ubuntu installed, then you have a desktop environment installed and a file browser which you can use to copy the ROMs directly to
$HOME/RetroPie/roms
from you source media - USB stick / CD rom or directly from another folder on the network.
The USB transfer method is not automatically enabled for Ubuntu/PC installs, since Ubuntu has its own auto-mount service which interferes with RetroPie's auto-mount method. -
That's exactly what I was looking for, I couldn't find where to actually put them. I guess I have a new issue now though since the test game I tried (Zelda for the SNES) just comes up black. When I use the Scraper it says the file isn't detected as a game. Does EmulationStation use a particular extension or anything like that for ROMs?

EmulationStation will look for a particular set of file extensions, depending on the system. You can take a look in the documentation, each system will list the supported file extensions. What's the complete name of your SNES ROM file ?

@mitu Legend of Zelda, The - A Link to the Past (U) [!].smc
When I tried to run it/scrape it ES seems to have also created another file with the same name but a .srm extension.

That's not created by the scraper - it's the emulator (RetroArch) that created it. It's a file that represents the 'battery save' equivalent of a real console.
For the game launch problem, if it happens just for one game, then you might have a bad ROM file. If it happens for all games (system/global), then the issue might be the emulator or a configuration/setup on your system.

@mitu Seems to be an issue with the setup, I tested two other ROMs. Unless the ROM site is bad, I'll look around. The only thing I got upon running the ROM is a black screen with two, vertical, white lines in the upper-right corner. I don't know if that means anything. The only setup I did was the install per the RetroPie site and setting up a controller (which works just fine).
Edit: Definitely the setup. I tried the ROMs with SNES9X on my Windows PC and they worked just fine.

You haven't added any details about your system - as detailed in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first.
To get a detailed log file from the emulator, enable debug logging from Runcommand launch menu when launching the game, then exit the emulator and post the contents of the log file (/dev/shm/runcommand.log
) on pastebin.com.
