Why are the binaries at 1.8.4 and a source update yields 1.8.1. ? Shouldn't source point to the latest available?

Here's your answer - you're running a version from before 1.8.4 was added to the RetroArch's package (January of this year). Update to the latest version of RetroPie and the source install will get your 1.8.4.

NOTE: RetroPie never had a 1.8.1 version of RetroArch included, is it possible you've modified the package yourself to get that version ?

@mitu ah yeah, my bad. Guess I'll have to wait for the next version for source to be 1.8.5, or I'll have to modify the setup script.
