PORTS ISSUES: VVVVVV & Cave Story
-
The official RetroPie pages for both of these ports are so lacking in actual information, it's laughable. Every guide I have tried (and there aren't many), my result is that the folders people tell you to make for the files, they show up in the ports menu on ES, so my Ports menu looks like:
Cave Story
CaveStory
VVVVVVlist item
And on top of that, they all give me the same message:
no config found for system portsWhat am I doing wrong, and how do I fix it?
-
I only have
vvvvvv
installed - recently - and all I needed to do was to copy thedata.zip
from the game to thevvvvvv
folder under theports
.And on top of that, they all give me the same message:
no config found for system portsThat indicates the installation hasn't been corrrectly configured the ports in question. What version of RetroPie are you using and how did you install those ports ?
-
@mitu I'm using the latest img and updated to the latest version as I reformatted and started from scratch just a few days ago. I followed the installation in the RetroPie-Setup optional package, and I do own it on Steam so i can get the data.zip fine, but the fact it's kicking me out is confusing me. I had to keep trying to launch it because the error code flashed so quick.
-
Which image are you using ? Did you update your RetroPie-Setup ?
-
@mitu I am using a Raspberry Pi 3b+ and running 4.5.1 before updating. I updated my RetroPie-Setup as well. If anything, I might just reformat and start from scratch. This go around, I managed to figure out how to get all the information scraped, and that along with all my ROMs are backed up, so there's that.
Is VVVVVV supposed to just run from the data.zip? If that's the case, then how does installing CaveStory correctly work?

For CaveStory, install the
lr-nxengine
package, then copy the game's original contents in theroms/ports/CaveStory
folder. Just to test, I've installed said package, created the folder and copied there the files:pi@retropie:~/roms/ports $ ls -1 CaveStory/ Config.dat data DoConfig.exe Doukutsu.exe Manual Manual.html OrgView.exe profile.dat Readme.txt settings.dat
and the game works without any issue. It's exactly how it's described in the doc page.
For
VVVVVV
, it's the same thing - install thevvvvvv
package, then copy thedata.zip
file - from the original game - toroms/ports/vvvvvv
and you should be good to go.Both games are launched from the Ports system, the installation will add the necessary entries to the gamelist.

My issue ended up being that there was a <command> in the es_systems.cfg that caused it to not work. I now have both games running, however, there is a persistent issue i've had since making this post. I still have two entries of cave story, one being the shell script, and the other being the folder that holds the .exe
How do I hide the folder CaveStory on ES?
