Epic Noir - Dark Mode Theme
-
Hi @chicuelo
Thank you for your great work, I love your theme. Very classy with beautiful artworks, it's perfect.
I just wanted to ask your agreement on a proposal. I am using multiple system : Retropie of course, but also Batocera, Recalbox, and a customized Windows install based on the works by @f-caruso. I have started to work on an "extended" version supporting advanced features from those versions of EmulationStation. I do not submit my changes to your repository because I think it will break the compatibility with the "most basic" versions of the frontend. So I would like to create a fork of your theme for those systems supporting advanced features. The enhancements I have already made are :
- Changed the system menu (dark theme and icons added)
- Added a "color" selector to choose the color of the "Game available" label and the color of the selector in the system menu
- Added an options to change the controller icons style (standard, xbox, snes, dualshock or arcade)
- Support of multiple languages (at the time being english and french but anyone can send me files with the translations to some other languages)
What I am still working on :
- Support of a grid view (Work in progress - now the grid view make the emulation station from @f-caruso , batocera and probably recalbox crash because it is not fully implemented)
- Support of Batocera, f.Caruso windows versions of Emulation station, Recalbox.I will only publish it if you are ok with that. So please, let me know.
And thank you again for your great job and the updates. -
@nono6493 Hey, it sounds very interesting! but I don´t know if all of this changes are based on the os, the theme or both.
I really like the option to change buttons depending your controller, but how do you manage that? manually or through menu?
I know the theme is also available on batocera.
Please mail me and we cant talk better.
Thanks! -
just wanted to say i absolutely LOVE this design, and i plan on using it once i get my retropie set up.
does your team accept donations? because i want to support the team
-
@pojr Thanks for your feedback! We are doing this because we love this stuff and not to make profit! the best support is that people enjoy and share our work
-
@chicuelo hi, could you make additional platforms: lightgun, screenshots. Please
-
@fetfreak Hi, we have lot of request of many systems and we can´t cover them all, but you could create those specific by your own replacing an existing one with the image of your preference!
-
When installing this through es themes you cannot edit any of the files so it is not possible to change the indicators, any way round this other than manually installing?
-
@Avigrace The only way to do this is manually

@chicuelo hola amigo!
I write in English, as this is an English forum.
If you are not familiar with the work of Alfonso Azpiri, he was an outstanding illustrator that also created the best ZX spectrum art of all time. Lorna, Camelot Warriors, Game Over...
He passed away not long ago :(

Enhorabuena por el theme. Keep up the great work!

@Skullman Great! I will check it out!
Saludos! -
@chicuelo I just wanted to say, Amazing Theme!!!
-
@benjamin_retro Thanks for your support!

@chicuelo This theme is outstanding! Thank you for making it.
I did have a few minor quality of life suggestions. (That I have already done on my download of this fantastic theme.)
The Sega CD/Mega CD art has the Doom 32x art on it, and is labeled as such. If you want to use an existing asset, I find the Final Fight art from FBA works great since there was a Final Fight game on that system as well. That also helps with the 32x and Sega CD showing up right next to each other when scrolling through Emulationstation.
Perhaps the Castlevania art should be for the Turbographix CD and PC Engine CD instead of TG16, since Rondo of Blood was a CD game. Then you could make the Ryu art for PC Engine the same as the regular TG16 art, since they are essentially the same system but for different markets.
Just little quality of life suggestions that I did to my download.
Thank you again to you and @nil06 for your hard work. This theme is outstanding!
-
@A-Bored-Ninja Thank you! I think it´s a good Idea, those details are great, if nil agrees he could swap the artwork on his fork
-
This is now my go-to theme. Trouble, as with many themes, is that if you have a system of games that is not supported by the theme, the systems appear blank.
This [thankfully] forced me to finally dip into theming a bit, and I better understand the effort that went into this one. REALLY well done!
Unofficially (for my own use) I find myself creating posters [sourced from Internet art] just to fill the gaps. Tougher than I thought. Some of my work doesn't quite hit the Epic Noir theme (eg. Sega CD's Earthworm Jim) but it gets me by, so my system at least "feels" complete.
Thank you both @nil06 (c64-dev) & @chicuelo for the inspiring project.

@cyperghost for me, these drift a bit away from the dark/painting vibe of epic-noir (like my Earthworm Jim take) but again, just my interpretation. I cropped/desaturated the trio pic. Would look something like this:
-
@roslof Very nice! I think they merge very fine with the theme
-
@roslof Thanks I like the Trio much more ;)

Hi,
I’ve installed the theme and it’s running a treat, great work. Quick question - what settings should I use to create custom artwork - for example the fade that you have (black to image), font name, etc? Just trying to create come custom artwork and wanted it to look as close as possible to your wonderful work!
Thanks
