      Hi all,
I've spent days at this and searched all over but I'm still having trouble....

I've installed RetroPie using an RPi 3, downloaded a big list of ROMs and had pretty much no success in getting them to work.
I'm particularly interested in bobble bobble, donkey kong, pacman, frogger - all arcade games.
I'm managing the ROMS by USB (plug it in, let it finish flashing, take it out, place roms in right directory) and they are showing up under the arcade menu but no matter what I do they won't run. I've tried making sure to check that they are on "imameforall" as this appears to be the advice from searches - and when that didn't work I went through changing to others but still no joy.

There doesn't seem to be a "baby steps" guide - and writing one for the multitude of different things people would want to do is pretty impractical to be fair - but baby steps is what I need so if you can help it would be much appreciated!

      TC

        Where have you been looking?

        You simply need to read:

        https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/Managing-ROMs

        and make sure that

        a) You have the correct romset for the version of MAME

I've installed RetroPie using an RPi 3, downloaded a big list of ROMs

It could be a random romset that you have with old or non-working versions! versions matter a lot as seen in the wiki link above.

        and

        b) You have the correct BIOS files if you decide to run individual ROMS.

There doesn't seem to be a "baby steps" guide - and writing one for the multitude of different things people would want to do is pretty impractical to be fair - but baby steps is what I need so if you can help it would be much appreciated!

There is a guide and It's all been written for you:

        https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki

This will answer everything. Then you can watch

tutorial to learn more about MAME.

        Good Luck!

If anything doesn't work after following it, then

@canned This is a tough one, So as @rbaker has said read the link it's very takes a while to get your head round I'm about two months in but simply each Emulator in your case "mameforall" your roms would need to be from the July 2000 release 0.37b5 if for example you went to a site a downloaded a mame Romset it would be like .164 this a high chance this wont work you need the right set for the right emulator. I use lr-Mame2003 so mine have to be the .78 romset . as a newbie it's quite hard to get your head round. Let me know if I can help...I've just gone through this. I think there is a private message function so if you want a detailed chat drop me a line and we can exchange emails.

A lot is trail and error. keep reading forums and watch videos on You Tube.

            https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/Managing-ROMs

This site may be confusing to read but it will be a good starting point getting roms to work.
