Fails to start on Linux Mint 19.3 xfce 32 bit

So I have this old notebook EeePC 901, intel Atom N270. nothing much, but it's ok for retro gaming.
I used to have RetroPie installed over lubuntu-18.04.4-desktop-i386, and it worked fine. but since lubuntu stopped the 32 bit support on newer versions (and this cpu is 32bit only), i decided to switch to mint xfce, which is nicer overall, plus a lot prettier, although slightly less snappy.
the thing is now retropie don't launch properly. when i run it, it just freezes the screen and nothing happens. so i launched it with debug and this is what shows:kirov@kirov-EeePC:~/Games/SmallSSD/RetroPie-Setup$ /opt/retropie/supplementary/emulationstation/emulationstation.sh --debug May 01 22:28:23 lvl2: EmulationStation - v2.9.1rp, built May 1 2020 - 14:15:11 May 01 22:28:23 lvl2: Parsing XML file "/opt/retropie/supplementary/emulationstation/resources/mamenames.xml"... So any idea what happens? I went to the setup script uninstalled and installed the carbon theme, tried updating it, but nothing changes. i see the GL vendor and stuff is empty, is that the issue? not sure what should show there.
P.S. at first i did the basic install, but uninstalled it to try installing it again (to check if this helps), and the second time i did only the core packages (plus the carbon theme), since it's way faster. but it behaves the same both times

Yes, EmulationStation needs now an OpenGL 2 capable GPU, yours seems to not support this version. See https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/25720/ for a workaround to install an older version.

I see, i guess this is a recent change, since i installed it about a month or two ago in the same machine and it worked fine. Thanks!
i will do the change.
Also sorry for duplicating the topic, i didn't find this before searching, i guess i searched for different parts.it worked btw. i'm sure you knew that, but wanted to confirm i did it :D how do i mark this as solved?
