Pi4 Mame2016 config file location

Hi. Updated my arcade to a Pi4, and had to run mame2016 for many roms to work. Thing is when i pressed P1 Button 2 (Left Alt) i kept getting booted to some diagnostic view I'd never seen before.
I reprogrammed my iPac to use "" instead but I can't find the config file for Mame 2016 anywhere to override settings. all other emulators pull from the central retroarch config but not mame2016...
Any suggestions?
