How easy would it be to be able to put systems into categories, as when you have many it starts to get cumbersome

Categories could be by brand (Commodore, Sega, Nintendo...) or years (eighties, nineties...) or type (coin op, 8-bit micros, handheld consoles...)

I know nothing of how the guts of Emulation Station works but would this be an easy task?

Thank you but not quite what I’m after.

I’m thinking of another level above the systems menu, like in this crude diagram!

i don't think this kind of thing would be possible. you can have sub-folders in directories but they're not themed and can break certain emulators (like MAME i believe). perhaps one of the alternative front-ends could do this (attract mode, phoenix, etc)

mame works fine with different directories the only issue you will have is with scrappers if you know how to do this though youll be fine. You can have a 2003 and 2010 dir with the roms all you have to do it pick the right emulator when launching
