Just bought brand new Pi 3 b+ to make it RetroPie. I am insstalled Retro pie on top of raspbian like guide said, but on boot after pretty bootscreen got an error :
May 23 12:43:56 lvl0: Error creating SDL window!
      Could not get EGL display
May 23 12:43:56 lvl0: Renderer failed to initialize!
May 23 12:43:56 lvl0: Window failed to initialize!

tried to make rpi-update and revert to stable firmware twice, reinstalled raspbian - nothing to help. Any suggestions ? Google didnt help.

Are you using Raspbian Lite or the Full version ? Did you enable the experimental GL driver ?

The manual install is for Rasbian Lite - EmulationStation should be started from the console terminal and not from the desktop.

How to enable experimental gl something-something ?

You don't have to, I only asked because this is not a supported configuration for the Pi model you're using and it would also cause errors when starting EmulationStation.

Stupid Question: Are you trying to run RetroPie through tightVNC? Because I get that error if I run it over tightVNC
