I can't get the 0/1 version to work

I get the right md5 checksum correct. but I have tried different imaging programs, even different computers and networks. If I try and open it on windows it says file is corrupt. If I try to use win32 disk imager it says failed at sector 0 if I try to verify it.

I don't think Windows knows how to open the
.img(7-Zip does, if you have it installed). Try writing the image using Etcher or the Raspberry Pi imager, but without un-zipping it.
