Hi all, fairly new to RetroPie, and I'm unable to get Mega Drive to display as Genesis on EmulationStation. Before you ask, do I really need this, yes, I do as I'm setting this up to be a birthday gift for a friend and want to get as close to their childhood memories as I can.

      First, the overall details:

      • Pi Model or other hardware: Pi 3 Model B
      • Power Supply used: Vilros 2.5A @ 5V
      • RetroPie Version Used: 4.6.1
      • Built From: Pre made SD Image on RetroPie website - retropie-buster-4.6-rpi2_rpi3.img
      • Guide used: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Mega-Drive-Genesis/
      • Emulator: Mega Drive

So far the steps in order of what I've done:

      1. I've followed the Mega Drive guide, creating the /opt/retropie/configs/all/platforms.cfg file with the content outlined in the documents.
      2. Gone to RetroPie Setup -> Update and updated everything besides the underlying OS packages.
      3. Gone to RetroPie Setup -> Manage Packages -> Manage main packages and ran Update all installed main packages
      4. Gone to RetroPie Setup -> Manage Packages -> Manage dependency packages and ran Update all installed dependency packages
      5. Gone to RetroPie Setup -> Manage Packages -> Manage code packages and ran Update all installed core packages
      6. Fully rebooted raspberry pi

After all that, still shows up as Sega Mega Drive. I'm not using a special theme, I'm using the default Carbon theme, and have done no real customization at this point beyond trying to get Mega Drive to show up as Genesis.

Any thoughts? Did I miss some blindingly obvious step?

This solution shouldn't be necessary with the platforms.cfg file present, but have you tried editing the es_systems.cfg file and changed the theme tag from megadrive to genesis?

@Lyle_JP I don't have an es_systems.cfg file in the location expected by EmulationStation, and when I add one, it's seen as corrupted and EmulationStation won't boot.

I've also tried modifying the RetroPie-Setup\platforms.cfg file to use the settings outlined in the documentation changing the theme and platform, then updating packages and rebooting, still with no success.

I even tried following the steps in this thread on the same issue, and had no success.

@Lyle_JP I replied below, and messed up cause I meant to reply directly to you rather than the thread. I even forgot to @mention you and edited my post to do so, but wasn't sure if that alerts a user to a reply if it's already been added.

So I figured it out, I modified the master es_systems.cfg located at /etc/emulationstation/es_system.cfg/. By changing the <theme>megadrive</theme> to <theme>genesis</theme>, I was able to get the appropriate Genesis artwork.

Thanks to @Lyle_JP for getting me to think about it from another angle!

I was having the exact same problem but with the PC Engine -> TurboGraphix 16. Thanks to this thread I've finally got that resolved!
