I can´t see the full game area

First of all, sorry if this is a common error or it is already explained but I couldn't find anything similar.
I have a Raspberry Pi 4 with an Emulationstation image.
When the system boots the image seems to fit to the screen fine, but once I play any game the right and left sides of the game area are lost. Therefore it's impossible to play many games, like Pacman where there is not scroll and the right and left sides are not visible.
I have tried to change the resolution to best fit my monitor and have also enabled and disabled overscan but the problem remains the same.
The monitor is a TFT VGA 17"

@sergio14f the monitor aspect ratio is 4:3

@sergio14f What do you mean with "an emulationstation image"?
Is it your own based on the default retropie image that is available here?

Who installed your system then ? It looks like it may be pre-configured for a certain resolution, which doesn't work with your own. If you'd like to understand how everything works, it's easier to start with the base image and go through the installation yourself.

@mitu It was my friend's friend. I saw these machine yesterday for the first time. I changed the resolution several times and finally it was possible to see the whole game. However, when this happens, the aspect ratio is not correct. Everything seems to be"higher" but at least it's better to play now. I don't know if maybe the retropie images are thought to be played on 16:9 monitors?

RetroPie can use all sorts of resolutions, it's not a problem here. It was probably - badly - configured to use an incorrect aspect ratio, ask your friend's friend. We can't help you here, since we don't know what and how it's configured.
