    Backing up entire Retropie Setup when running from USB HDD

      After many many hours of configuring I have completely setup Retropie and have it going exactly as I like it.

      I have configured Retropie to run from my USB HDD as I have large PSX ROMS and needed a lot of space. I configured this as per the guide in https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/Running-ROMs-from-a-USB-drive

      I would like to know that if I create an image of my SD Card and then copy the contents of the HDD using the Samba share if this would be enough. I have a feeling it wont as I have modified many files on the HDD that reside in the home directory which the Samba share doesn't see.

      Would it work to plug the SD card into my PC and create an image of that and also plug the HDD in my PC and create an image of that as well using a utility like Win32 Disk Imager.

      I gather I would need to image the SD card as the PI requires this in order to boot up?

      Any help would be much appreciated.

        It's important that you image the SD card to get a 1:1 backup as noted here If you want the convenience of flashing that backup back to your SD card later in one step. You may also image the USB drive if you want, but there are few if any benefits.

          I guess the question is then that if I have modified or copied files to locations such as /opt/retropie/emulators/retroarch/shader (which isn't a path that a Samba share can see and is located on the USB HDD not the SD Card) how do I make sure this is all backed up aswell??

          I'm probably wrong as I am a Linux moron but I thought that when I followed the instructions here https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/Running-ROMs-from-a-USB-drive that it placed a lot of configuration settings on the USB HDD that can't be copied with the Samba share??

          For example, I know I have made changes to files such as /etc/emulationstation/es_systems.cfg which I assume are now located on the USB HDD but I cannot see these files through the Samba share. How do I backup files such as this??
