No input with new rOMS and doom won't start

Quick one....
I'm new to retro but not pi's.
I have it all running, very easy....I've got some roms of my favourite old games....amstrad and atari2600 for example.
They open fine from the menu
I put Roma in the folder, reboot, they appear...they open......But I have no input, so I can't start them, exit anything.....
I have mouse and keyboard plugged in and a configures ps2 controller that works fine in menus.
Same in the default doom....I just get a splash doom screen and nothing does anything....
Grateful for any help.
