retropie 3.8.1, original model B (for testing , will be zero once it works if that makes a difference)

I've hooked up a set of buttons to the GPIO for input and written a small python script which runs in the background to let them act like keyboard presses, they work great in retropie but once a game has been started they are unresponsive. I'm guessing i'm missing a configuration step somewhere, but i can't for the life of me find out what no matter what i google lol

Hoping someone on here will be able to help

I'm using this software https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit-Retrogame and it works perfectly :)

Yeah i saw that in my initial investigations into the subject, really wanted to be able to write my own , and feel that i'm half way there with it at least , so would love to get it working properly if i can , if only for my own ego lol

Nice! Keep the good work then! And also, it would be awesome if you were to open source it once it's finished ;) I'd love to try it out
