I decided to give my pi a little love and bought a nespi 4 case and could use get use for my a ssd disk.

Prior to this I only had my trusted SD card but for added storage (and that I had a spare disk) I gave it a try and followed the guide for usbromservice. https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Running-ROMs-from-a-USB-drive/

On boot I get an error that usbromservice couldn't mount and in ES for some reason I only have Amiga as system. I guess that the usbromservice did start but somehow never copied the roms, except for Amiga. In /media/usb1 there are a few files but not many. I thought that it might be that copying files could take some time, but didn't see any changes after waiting for a while.

I tried disabling usbromservice and removed the ssd disk, the same error occurred on reboot.

Pi Model or other hardware: Pi4
      Power Supply used: original
      RetroPie Version Used 4.6.7
Built From: Pre made SD Image on RetroPie website
USB Devices connected: nespi case 4, so three usb connected in the case, which one is the ssd.

Does this make sense to anyone?

I think I have narrowed it down to the sata controller in retroflags case. Even without the ssd in place, the same error occurs, and it wasn’t there before the case.

Anyone else with nespi case 4 that found a solution with usbromservice?

Looks like an issue with the controller.
Check out https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=245931, it has some useful information for troubleshooting and fixing issues in this configuration (SSD with USB controller).

@mitu Not sure if it relates to that. The SATA to USB controller is USB 3.0 and connected to USB 3.0. From what I understood the issues was with USB 3.0 SSD devices to USB 2.0?

Also, I did see that Amiga folder, in that folder I have about 1700 games. If it were really slow speeds as described, I wouldn't see them either, right?

One other thing, with the SSD connected, the whole system becomes very sluggish. Is that something that can be the case when files are copied from sd card to SSD? I'm thinking if I just didn't wait long enough for the files to transfer...

Could the manual steps in the ROMs to USB drive work here instead?

No, it has to do with the USB3 to SSD drive adapters:

We have seen reports of extremely degraded performance when using several types of USB3.0 to SSD adapter or when using native USB3.0 disk drives. This post details why there is a difference in behaviour from models prior to Pi 4 and the recommended workaround.

I doubt it, but you can try.

It didn't fix the issue with the error message, but the roms copied over.

So the error itself doesn't seem to have any noticeable effect. Found some more info of the output.

                Sep 10 20:28:13 retropie systemd[1]: Starting usbmount@dev-sda.service...
Sep 10 20:28:28 retropie usbmount[740]: dev/sda does not contain a filesystem or disklabel

                Can I just ignore it...?

                  Yes, that's a benign error.

Cool, then I can go back to fiddling around a bit more :)
