My issue stems from using an image downloaded from a third party site with pre-loaded content. A lot of it was out of date. I connect to a VGA monitor with an HDMI/VGA adapter and audio should be through the headphone jack. There's a loading video that plays prior to emulation station loading. I do get sound for that, but not emulation station or the games. I was originally able to fix the sound issue with:

      sudo amixer cset numid3=1

      sudo alsactl store

However, I lost it again after running sudo apt udpate and sudo apt upgrade in order to be able to add certain PVR clients to Kodi.

Some anomalies I've noticed are that I couldn't run sudo ~/RetroPie-Setup/retropie_setup.sh. It said the command couldn't be found or something. I ran the updates through retropie setup options instead.
It seemed to install a lot of things and took a long time. It did give me one error at the end that seemed unrelated to anything audio. The password has also been changed by the creator of the image, and I can't update it by adding init=/bin/sh to cmdline.txt. I get a black screen after some code briefly displays.

After installing my updates I changed the audio output to headphone jack again, but nothing changed. When I go to raspi-config I see the following before the options load:

ALSA lib control.c.1375:(snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL local
lvl10: VolumeControl::init() failed to attach to default card!

      aplay -L shows:

      null
Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)
      jack
      Jack audio connection kit
      pulse
      PulseAudio Sound Server
      default
Playback/recording through the PulseAudio sound server
      output

      My config has hdmi_ignore_edid_audio=1.

I read comments in the sticky that said PulseAudio was not recommended. I tried removing that, but then it said I didn't have any devices or something to that effect. Does this mean the original audio package was removed by the image creator and I need to reinstall Bluez-Alsa? Is there an easy way to do that? Initial google searches look pretty complicated. Thanks!

I thought those errors and the aplay results would be descriptive enough, but I think I left out some key pieces of info. I had added a couple of sound files based on this forum when my first solutions didn't work. I went back and deleted those files and purged pulseaudio. I also set my audio to Headphones in es_settings.cfg. Everything seems to be working, though my splashscreen video is much louder than emulation station.

Edit: This feels like the dumbest question ever. How do I mark something solved? As far as I can tell I'm supposed to edit the title of the thread, but I'm not seeing that option. My only topic tools are to delete the post...
