Controller config bugging out, not letting me asign buttons
-
Hello everyone, ive seen this issue being posted one more time 2 years ago, which sadly never got a proper solution to the problem, since im posting this issue again. Heres the link to the old post: https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/20458/emulationstation-freezes-when-configuring-controller
Im running a Raspberry Pi zero W plugged into a regular USB power supply, a 64GB SD card with Raspbian flashed onto it and the Raspberry Pi 1 version of Retropie 4.6.8 installed on it, since i dont see a dedicated raspi 0 version for it.
So whats happening is that whenever i try to configure a controller, i will hold down the button, the config screen will pop up in part and im not able to do much more than that. I tried to blindly asign every button to at least continue to the next screen but it doesnt let me press the "OK" button at the bottom, which is essencially the only thing showing up on screen. The only thing that im able to do is press F4 to exit out of the whole thing. I would post a photo of the issue, but it wont let me for some reason right now. It looks almost exactly like the image the user Tesan6 posted in the other post i was talking about, so theres at least some reference there. Help would be really appreciated.

This means your controller is detected, but the buttons do not register. What controller are you using ? If you're able to use F4 and exit out of EmulationStation and test if the gamepad's buttons are registering by running
jstest /dev/input/js0
and pressing the buttons/joystick on your gamepad to check if they're registering. If they're not, then the gamepad will not work in EmulationStation. You can exit the test with Ctrl + C on your keyboard.

Hey, thanks for the quick response. The controllers i plan to use are just some USB SNES controllers, so it just plugs into the pi without any bluetooth config or anything.
They dont seem to be the issue though, since even when i try to use the keyboard, it has the same exact problem. I uploaded a picture of it to Imgur, maybe thatll make it clearer as to whats happening here. Here is the link to it: https://imgur.com/NC11SWO

You said you were able to use the keyboard, are you not ?
The only thing that im able to do is press F4 to exit out of the whole thing.
How are you connecting the gamepad/keyboard - do you use an USB hub ? If so, maybe the hub gets disconnected/de-powered when you start using it (keyboard or gamepad).

Well i can F4 out of it, and outside of RetroPie it works fine, same with the controller, but if i try to configure any kind of device as a controller in RetroPie it has that problem.
I got a USB Hat on the pi and thats how i connect USB and ethernet to it. it got power LEDs for each of the inputs and nothing seems out of the ordinary with it when entering into EmulationStation, so i doubt that the Hat is the cause of the issue.
