Font assertion failing for a theme

Trying to use the epicnoir theme (via esthemes), and I'm running into this assertion that's crashing retropie:
RetroPie-Setup/tmp/build/emulationstation/es-core/src/resources/Font.cpp:410: void Font::renderTextCache(TextCache*): Assertion `*it->textureIdPtr != 0' failed.Made a github issue on the theme's repo: https://github.com/c64-dev/es-theme-epicnoir/issues/3
It's only happening for this theme. Any idea what the issue might be?
