Newbie question regarding updates
-
Does an update of RetroPie come with updated emulators or do they need to be updated individually ?
That said, where would be the best place to keep myself up-to-date in terms of individual emulator updates etc. , as the RetroPie main games mostly concerns itself with the OS in general ? -
Retropie comes with emulator builds that were generally built at the same time as the latest retropie version. Some emulators are in active development, but many are only updated occasionally.
You can do an update and choose to build emulators from source to get the most up-to-date set, but it is a long process. You can also do updates on individual emulators. I personally just stick to updating the binaries because it's a relatively quick process and usually the bugs are sorted out by the time the binaries are built. The team will update the binary builds if a major bug is found and fixed too.

Another newbie question,
I see the instructed way to update Retropie is via "Quick Update"
Per Wiki:
Quick Install: If wanting to update select this option - this is intended as a first install - ie on top of raspbian, or if coming from a 3.x retropie. Why does it say "intended as first install" if we are updating? I updated from 3.8.1 to Beta 4.0; is that the right way?
I am on Beta 4.0 now, so should I "Quick Install" all the time?
-
to update when on 4.x you do Packages / Update installed packages or so - it will ask to update retropie-setup first when doing that and also ask if you want to update system packages. Quick install will install all packages from Core / Main so would re-install any you have removed.

Oh okay. I definitely do not want to bring back any cores that I have hidden away removed. I just want to update my existing cores and Retropie/EmulationStation like when 4.0 is officially launched, 4.1 and so on.
