So, I've just finished putting my pi 3 in a little acrylic case that came with a fan, however, the heat sinks my pi came with are a little too tall, so the fan and top of the case sit slightly open.

Anyway, my question is do I need the heat sink if I have a fan, or should I just disregard aesthetics and leave the case open?

i would recommend to have both. specially if you are like me that lives in a very hot place. (the Desert ). What you can do is buy a smaller heat sink and make sure it fits.

P.S where did you buy the fan and case?

I hear you. It took me a while to find a case that met my requirements.

I needed enough clearance for heat sinks + fan, but I also wanted an open design for airflow AND be able to add an extra heatsink on the SDRAM chip. This means I need to be able to lift the Pi a little bit.

          Ended up buying this: http://tinyurl.com/zh4dw2t

That is a killer little display case.

As for the case I'm using, it was a combo case with fan I found on ebay for a couple dollars. It doesn't look the best now that it's in my hands, but it beats having the board laying on the table.
