      I need help figuring out which command in the config.txt file will turn on hdmi when a display is not yet on or connected

        hdmi_force_hotplug=1
        hdmi_drive=2
        

        Those should force it to use hdmi even if a monitor isn't connected at boot but you might notice the resolution isn't set right. You can look at http://elinux.org/RPiconfig#Video_mode_options for more fun things you can tinker with.
