Note that with any custom platforms.cfg you create you'll need to update all systems from the setup script to generate a new es_systems.cfg with your changes.

How do you do this exactly? I am trying to change the megadrive theme to genesis and pc engine to TG16. I already made a platforms.cfg and placed it in /opt/retropie/configs/all/platforms.cfg but I can not get the default platform theme to change for those systems.

Did you re-install the MD/Genesis emulators, for the change to be propagated to es_systems.cfg ? If yes, then post the .cfg file you added in /opt/retropie/configs/all/platforms.cfg.
