Have to power on/off twice for some reason
-
I have no idea what I did, but for some reason I find that I have to hit my power switch twice to get my raspberry pi to turn on.
Here’s my setup: I have a raspberry pi 4. I also have a powered usb hub, if that matters. I am powering it through the standard usb-c power cable that came with the Cana kit. One maybe important part is that the power cable has a button on it, but I don’t use that. I have it all hooked up to a power strip with an on/off switch.
When I’m done gaming, I either use the retropie UI to shutdown, or if I’m in the terminal, I type “shutdown now”. Then I turn the power strip off.
It seems that now when I turn the power strip on:
- all the monitors turn on
- all my buttons light up (which are powered by usb encoders attached to the powered usb hub)
- nothing boots
I then cycle it off and on, and everything boots fine.
I’m not quite sure how to debug this one. Anyone ever had this happen before?

@jigidyjim Are you saying that the Pi4 doesn't power on whatsoever or just doesn't boot?
If the Pi4 has no green lights during the first try I'd start by trying a different cable. I don't recommend using it for long term, but even a USB C phone cable should be plenty to see if the Pi powers up with it.
If it's a solid red light on the Pi after a second then I'd focus on the image or sdcard/drive the OS is installed on.If the Pi4 does seem to power and light up, but with no display, I'd make sure the monitor stays on after power off and see what the Pi does. I had an issue on an another Pi where it wouldn't detect video properly unless the TV/Monitor was sending a signal first.
I believe adding
hdmi_force_hotplug=1
to the /boot/config.txt fixed this issue. -
@kn4thx thanks for the reply. The pi does have power - red light is on. I’m going to try the config you mention.
