cant access retroarch menu from within emulators?

ok so i can access the retroarch menu from within the main retropie screen but when im in for example the gameboy emulator and i press select+x nothing happens doesnt matter if i use a gamepad or my keyboard even if i bind custom hotkeys it doesnt work
incase you are wondering why i need to access the retroarch menu from withing an emulator this video will explain why

It looked like you did it ok in the SNES emulator in the video?
