Network Credentials Prompt When Networking Into RetroPie

RetroPie Version Used: 4.7.9
Built From: Pre made SD Image on RetroPie website
USB Devices connected: Official Raspberry Pi Keyboard
Controller used: 8bit N30 pro
Error messages received:

I’m not receiving an error message; I am more or less trying to understand how networking into the RetroPie from a Windows 10 PC works. I have a mapped shortcut to my RetroPie’s IP address on my Windows 10 desktop. I am able to network into my RetroPie just fine but occasionally Windows will prompt me for Network Credentials (typically after I reboot my PC and network back into my RetroPie). These network credentials Windows is asking me for are different than what I use to gain access to my RetroPie through PuTTY or WinSCP. I'm able to login fine but I’d like to reset the password or username that Windows is asking me for to make that connection more secure. What controls this username and password? Can they be reset through the raspberry’s pi config settings?

Submitting this help request is really my last resort. I’ve scanned the RetroPie’s forum and other sources for a couple of days to see if anyone encountered this and I couldn’t find the solution.

The credentials are the same - user pi and whatever password you've set for it (default is raspberry). If you wish to change it - see https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/linux/usage/users.md

Odd. The Network Credentials now accepts my username and the password I set via raspi-config. It also accepts a username of admin and a simple password separate from the default. Is it typical for Network Credentials to accept two sets of credentials to network into the same RetroPie?

To test, I used these second set of credentials to SSH into the RetroPie via PuTTY or WinSCP and they are rejected there.

The shares configured on RetroPie allow access without any credentials. My guess is whatever values you put there, it will work.

@mitu ahh good to know. I appreciate the clarity. So this nothing I should really worry about from a security perspective, right?

No, but you should change the password for the pi user, as a best practice - especially if you've enabled SSH access.
