Retroarch embedded into RetroPie/EmulationStation

I'm running the latest Retropie image 4.7.11 from the repository.
When playing a retroarch emulator, and going back to the config menu looks like retroarch on the Wii. Green screen themed with no background.
I have a canned image from another source which looks like standard retroarch when backing out to the config menu.
The config you I'm referencing is related to hitting "hotkey + X" on a controller.
Why does it look different?

@billymild by default retropie uses the RGUI menu driver:
it sounds like you're talking about the XMB menu driver:
you could set it to the latter via https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Configuration-Editor/ -

- configure libretro options
- all/retroarch.cfg
- menu_driver = xmb
note that RGUI is the menu that is referenced in all our docs, and may be more performant on low spec machines like Pis.
