WiiMote partially unresponsive

OK, first things first. Latest version of retropie running on Ubuntu 20. Wii games have been running perfectly for more than a year until this morning. For some reason I decided to update Dolphin. I should know to leave well enough alone. Anyway, after re-configuring the info in Dolphin's "Controllers" tab. I fired up a game. Controller wasn't being recognized. Went to the "Bluetooth" menu of Retropie. The Wiimote was recognized and paired. But not "connected"! Now, when I start a Wii game, I press the red sync button, feel the rumble and the red player #1 light comes on and stays solid. Problem is, none of the buttons or d-pad work. Tried several Wiimotes, same result. I'm stumped. Any suggestions! Thanks in advance.

OK, just an update. Completely uninstalled then re-installed Ubuntu. Retropie bluetooth problem still present. Uninstalled Ubuntu in favor of Linux Mint. Retropie bluetooth problem still present. The only constant here is Retropie. I'm expecting a new dongle in the mail tomorrow, though I really doubt that's the problem. It really seems as though Retropie is screwing up bluetooth.

This is weird. New dongle arrived and inserted. No change. RetroPie not detecting, pairing or connecting anything. We're always told to disable onboard bluetooth. Just for the heck of it, I decided to ENABLE onboard bluetooth. Gee, what do you think happened? RetroPie detected the Wiimote, paired the Wiimote and connected the Wiimote. Tried a few reboots to make sure everything continued working and all is fine. If anyone has an explanation for that, I'd love to hear it. I'm just happy I can play Wii games again!
