Installed the lr-mess fork for this obscure Japanese micro and everything seemed to go smoothly - games boot and run at full speed with sound. The only problem is that it's impossible to start any of them.

Almost every game for the system asks you to press 1 or 2 to start (it had a keyboard but also two joystick ports), but no key or button actually registers. I've tried the normal 1 and 2 and the numpad versions, with and without Shift or Control or NumLock or ScrollLock, I've tried defining them to buttons in both the Retroarch and MESS menus (by default Retroarch has them set to L2 and R2, which my joystick doesn't have, so I tried moving them to other buttons), but nothing works.

[EDIT: Never mind. Turns out they're all over the place and most games will start with something, but it's never the same twice.]

[EDIT 2: Found some handy per-game instructions here: https://www.gamingalexandria.com/wp/2021/02/bandai-rx-78-gundam-computer-games-preserved/]

Raspberry Pi 3b and 8GB Raspberry Pi 4, both running Retropie 4.7.1 installed from scratch using Raspberry Pi Imager, with wired keyboard, wireless mouse and double arcade joystick attached.
