      EDIT: This issue was solved with Mitu's help. Added the solution to this post for others.

      Issue: Retropie hotkey is being overridden. When I boot up a game, the select button opens up the RetroArch menu. I am no longer able to use the standard retropie hotkeys of hotkey + B or hotkey + start, etc.. As a result, it also remaps my start and select buttons to the L & R triggers.

      What happened: I ran the Retroarch online updater and also ran the updated for the joypads. No reason why. I was in the back downloading cheats and thought it would be fine to update other things while I was at it.

      What have I tried: So far, I have only tried deleting retroarch.cfg and replacing it with a renamed retroarch.cfg.rp-dist. No joy.

      Any ideas what could be causing this and how to fix?

      I tried searching the docs and I feel like the solution might be in retroarch.cfg but I'm not familiar enough to mess with anything without guidance.

      Details:
      Pi Model or other hardware: 4B
      Power Supply used: 3.5A
      RetroPie Version Used:
      Built From: Raspberry Pi Imager
      USB Devices connected: 2 wired controllers
      Controller used: 8bitdo SN30 Pro

      SOLUTION
      Credit to @mitu for the solution.

      Check the /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch-joypads folder and see if it has the .cfg file for your controller, it should be named exactly like the controller name. Delete other files or folders that are present in the folder and keep just the that .cfg.

        That probably downloaded the auto-configuration profiles for joypads and your gamepad's configuration is using one of those profiles.
        Re-configure your gamepad in EmulationStation and the gamepad's configuration should be re-created, as it was before.

          @mitu Thanks Mitu. I tried re-configuring the input through EmulationStation but the problem still persists.

          It feels like Retroarch is overriding the controls when I load up a game.

          Any other ideas?

            If you have used 'Reset Configuration' in RetroArch's menu (highly un-recommended), then the location of the auto-configuration profiles for RetroArch may have changed and the RetroPie generated ones may not be found.
            If so, then rename the retroarch.cfg.rp-dist to retroarch.cfg in the /opt/retropie/configs/all folder and re-try.
            Failing that, you should provide a verbose log - see here how to do that.

              @mitu Ok, I ran verbose logging on a NES game and pulled this from RetroPie Manager. Let me know if this is not what you were needing.

                No, you posted a verbose log of EmulationStation, which is just the front-end, not of the emulator itself. The file where the log is stored is /dev/shm/runcommand.log - as explained in the doc page I linked earlier.

                    I don't see any remaps being loaded and the log doesn't show which config file is loaded.
                    Check the /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch-joypads folder and see if it has the .cfg file for your controller, it should be named exactly like the controller name. Delete other files or folders that are present in the folder and keep just the that .cfg.

                    As an aside, you're running with a 4k resolution, which might slow down your games since it runs at 30hz. You should configure the resolution on your Pi to 1080p@60hz and the games should be run smoother.
