Trouble Updating Retropie on 3b+
-
#1 After I reinstalled my roms, two of them won’t boot anymore even though they used to under v4.4
(Both of them are gameboy color games)A verbose log might give some insight on why, but check if you're using the same emulator. Could be that recent versions of the emulator require a different ROM or that the files are not incomplete or corrupted.
#2 My Xbox One controller won’t connect via Bluetooth like it used to, I choose the first security mode and the Bluetooth setup locks up. It shows my inputs on the bottom of the screen and I have to restart my pi.
Xbox One controllers need some tweaking of Bluetooth parameters to make them pair, you may have done this on your old image, but didn't repeat the necessary steps on the new installation.
My advice is to install the
xpadneo
driver (it's in the drivers section of the RetroPie packages) and reboot, then try again the pairing.#3 The performance of the N64 emulation is much worse than it used to be. I booted up Mario 64 and it is a slideshow now whereas it was much better running under v4.4 (it used to run almost as well as my actual n64 until I updated)
What emulator are you using ? The default emulator may have changed between versions and you could be running a newer and more accurate emulator, hence the slowdown. There are a few topics about N64 emulation and how to improve your performance, look it up.

#1 Thanks, I’ll try finding new roms and see if that fixes my gbc issue.
#2 As for my Xbox controller, I never installed any drivers using retropie v4.4 so I wonder why it worked previously but won’t sync after I updated. I’ve read a few different solutions and they all have different methods/drivers so I’ll try your suggestion and see if it works.
#3 Also I’ve tried the rest of my n64 roms and most of them run with noticeably lower frame rates. Worst of all Goldeneye won’t load half of the menus, and during gameplay the textures are all incorrect and flashing now. When I use the n64 emulator on v4.4 and v4.7.1 I run it stock. I have never changed any settings or configurations. That’s why I was so surprised it runs much worse after the update. I have looked at a few different tutorials and videos about how to improve n64 performance, but a lot of it is from a few years ago with old versions.
#4 Is there a way to find old images/versions of retropie? If I am unable to solve some of my problems I feel like downgrading would be the easiest way to fix all of my issues hah.
And again thanks for the insight

@mitu That page doesn't have any download links. It points you to the Download Area, which is always current.

Hm, I though it had or there was a link to all releases somewhere.
Anyway, all RetroPie releases are listed on https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/releases, with links to images (when available). -
@mitu I have the same problem but now on my screen it says, Standby cause no operation.
It is right across the middle of the screen and it doesn't matter which raspberry pi or as card I use the message is still the same.
Any ideas how to sort please? -
@dazwood72 This is not the same problem, please use a separate topic.
-
To anyone that had the same problems I did with n64 games running with slower frame rates and incorrect textures, downgrade to retropie versions 4.4 to 4.5.1 to solve those problems.
Thanks again for helping me with those problems, also I was wondering if you knew about how controller configurations are saved.
I have been redoing my controller configurations with the same controller multiple times.
Is this creating a bunch of configuration files and wasting space? Or does the configuration file get erased and replaced every time I change it?

That's just a workaround for your particular case, not a general solution.

No, it will write again the same configuration file - why would it create separate configuration files ?

Good to know, I wasn’t sure how it handled overwriting controller settings.
Is there anyone working on the next version of retropie that should be notified about the differences in n64 performance on 3b+’s? I’d like to let them know and possibly donate more if the problem gets solved. As I said before I don’t change any settings in the emulators themselves and the difference was night and day.
Anyway, I’ll try flashing different versions of retropie later on and update this thread in the future for reference if I find anything else.
Thanks as always for the knowledge and time @mitu ,

Make sure you use the latest RetroPie version and test again your N64 game(s), then open a separate topic and add the info from https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first. A verbose log - as explained in the aforementioned topic - should be helpful - post it on pastebin.com and provide the link in your topic.
