Suggestions for ports #2

Having trouble with a couple of things in RetroPie-Extra.
HEBORIS: installs and runs, but most of the sound is missing and the game only runs in a tiny corner of the screen, even if you set it to 640x480 in Runcommand.
TEXMASTER2009: installs and runs, but again only in a tiny corner even if you set it to 640x480 in Runcommand, and there doesn't seem to be any ingame fullscreen option. There's a config-file option but I can't find where the game has installed to - it's not in /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/ports like most ports are - so I have no idea where to edit it.
(Also it runs with a message saying "Raspberry Pi GPIO Disable. (Need to be root.)". I have no idea whether this is something I should be concerned about.)
WIZZNIC: Seems to install but then nothing happens - you get booted straight back to ES. Again I can't tell WHERE it's installed - I tried adding a folder called "wizznic" in /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/ports with the game files in it but that had no effect.

@JimmyFromTheBay for all of them you need to update the RP-E as i just updated everything
but
HEBORIS works or for me it does in full screen, not sure about the sound as my setup has no speakers
TEXMASTER2009 has been removed due to only small screen and no fix found

I updated it about 15m before I posted that comment.
HEBORIS works or for me it does in full screen, not sure about the sound as my setup has no speakers
Hmm, mysterious. Where does it install to? I'll see if I can find a config file or something.
TEXMASTER2009 has been removed due to only small screen and no fix found
Bah. There's a thread elsewhere on the forum about installing it directly which includes a pic of someone running it in fullscreen, will try that method instead.

that is a very old post, things and software has changed so things that worked 5 years ago in full screen, most likely will not anymore, which is why we need to use XINIT
but give it a try, if you can get it to work in fullscreen i can update the script to do so
EDIT
but since @zerojay already was on that post, and he is the one who wrote the script to start with. most likely its not going to work -
Ladys and Gentalmen it is time for a Big Update
First @sleve_mcdichael has updated our new GUI interface for installing RP-E. Now we can pick what section we want to install instead of installing everything, Or if there is only a few things you want to install you can pick just the ones you want.
Please give it a try and let us know what you all think. Soon moving forward that will be the only way to install the scripts.
I will be removing the Old way in the near future.
Now for the good stuff.
I have gone and installed and tested every script. I have removed all that dont work/build, or ones that only play in a small window. they are now in RetroPie-Extra-unstable
Here is the current list of the working scripts that I have gone through. I only tested this on a 27" monitor so if there are any screen size issues on bigger screens I can only do so much
NOTES
ECWOLF installs, but something is wrong with the patch file that fixes the missing esc key. Im working on that
OPENDUNE the config file it not installing correctly, also working on thatTo get full screen on most of these if you dont know you need to drop the resolutions in the RUNCOMMAND screen to whatever size looks good for you.

Just a note that the new install script does incorporate
-a
and-r
flags for users who still require a non-interactive terminal command to add or remove all RP-Extra scripts without using the GUI.Usage: ./install-extras.sh [-u|--update] [option] [rp_setup_directory] Options: -a --all Add all RetroPie-Extra modules (may severely impact the loading time of RetroPie-Setup and retropiemenu configuration items, especially on slower hardware) -r --remove Remove all RetroPie-Extra modules (does not "uninstall" the modules in RP-Setup) -h --help Display this help and exit

I wish I could figure out what I'm doing wrong with this one. It acts exactly like Texmaster does in terms of only playing in a tiny window, and nothing I try fixes it.
I did notice that the error message it displayed while installing/uninstalling referenced ZeroJay rather than Exarkuniv, no idea if that's significant.

but give it a try, if you can get it to work in fullscreen i can update the script to do so
I found the install directory and the config file, and changed it to fullscreen rather than a window, but it made no discernible difference. There were permissions warnings when I edited the file, but it still seemed to save the changes.
-
@JimmyFromTheBay post what your ''emulation.cfg'' has in it.
As this point I'm going with some how you are installing a old script.
Or better yet. Post the whole install script, that way we can see what one you are using.
I'm going with you are changing the resolution through the runcommand, correct? -
Ha, I just reinstalled it for the 6th time and now it's in fullscreen :D
But I still have almost no sound, even after changing the settings from MIDI to MP3, and no background images. Am I meant to download MP3s and images separately from somewhere?
It's a nightmare trying to find any documentation for this stuff, but it LOOKS as though they're meant to go in /opt/retropie/configs.hdmi/ports/heboris/config/res, except I don't have the permissions to create that folder.
This is what's in HEBORIS.SH in /home/pi/RetroPie-Extra/scriptmodules/ports:
#!/usr/bin/env bash # This file is part of RetroPie-Extra, a supplement to RetroPie. # For more information, please visit: # # https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup # https://github.com/Exarkuniv/RetroPie-Extra # # See the LICENSE file distributed with this source and at # https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Exarkuniv/RetroPie-Extra/master/LICENSE # rp_module_id="heboris" rp_module_desc="HeborisC7EX - Tetris The Grand Master Clone" rp_module_help="To get mp3 audio working, you will need to change the music type from MIDI to MP3 in the Heboris options menu." rp_module_repo="git https://github.com/zerojay/HeborisC7EX.git" rp_module_section="exp" rp_module_flags="!mali" function depends_heboris() { getDepends libsdl1.2-dev libsdl-mixer1.2-dev libsdl-image1.2-dev libgl1-mesa-dev xorg } function sources_heboris() { gitPullOrClone } function build_heboris() { make md_ret_require="$md_build/heboris" } function install_heboris() { md_ret_files=( 'heboris' 'res' 'replay' 'config' 'heboris.ini' 'heboris.txt' ) } function configure_heboris() { local script="$md_inst/$md_id.sh" chown pi:pi "$md_inst/heboris" moveConfigDir "$md_inst/config" "$md_conf_root/$md_id/config" moveConfigDir "$md_inst/replay" "$md_conf_root/$md_id/replay" moveConfigFile "$md_inst/heboris.ini" "$md_conf_root/$md_id/heboris.ini" #create buffer script for launch cat > "$script" << _EOF_ #!/bin/bash pushd "$md_inst" "./heboris" \$* popd _EOF_ chmod +x "$script" addPort "$md_id" "heboris" "HeborisC7EX - Tetris The Grand Master Clone" "XINIT:$script" }
This is what's in EMULATORS.CFG in /opt/retropie/configs.hdmi/ports/heboris:
heboris = "XINIT:/opt/retropie/ports/heboris/heboris.sh" default = "heboris"
Also, btw, there's a really weird issue with Blake Stone - the sequel, Planet Strike runs perfectly, but the original Aliens Of Gold just dumps back to EmulationStation.
-
@JimmyFromTheBay well I'm glad you got full screen. As for the sound. I don't know if something is missing like a driver or it just will not work. I know the mp3s are in the folders. Same for the backgrounds.
You have to remember most of the ports on RP-E are no longer being worked on so they might be incomplete.
Since I personally did not make the script for this I never looked in to how complete the game outside of what zerojay wrote
As for Blake stone. You need the full game for it to work.
Only the demo is preinstalled.Unless you have it. Then something is going on and I have to look at it

Yes, I have the full game for both.
[EDIT: scratch this - there was some sort of conflict created by copying over too many files from the full version or not deleting the shareware ones or something. Long story short, it works now. It's a bit academic as neither game supports gamepad input so they're not much fun, but I do like solving problems :D]
-
@sleve_mcdichael said in Suggestions for ports #2:
I know the mp3s are in the folders. Same for the backgrounds.
There are definitely no MP3s or background images installed with the game. But I navigated about a thousand broken links and finally found some somewhere. (MP3s called bgm01.mp3, bgm01.mp3 etc and PNGs called BACK01.png, BACK02.png etc.)
This PR should fix the permissions and make a link to the configs dir for easy access to
res
and its contents:Okay, I updated and reinstalled and I now have a res folder and all the requisite subfolders in /opt/retropie/ports/heboris, but they're empty and I still have no permission to copy anything into them.
(There are shortcut links to accessible config and replay folders, but not one for res.)
However, following the logic of what appeared to be happening, I created a res folder and subfolders in /opt/retropie/configs.hdmi/ports/heboris alongside the config and replay folders in there, and added the MP3s to the res/bgm subfolder and the PNGs to the res/bg subfolder. I changed the game's settings to MP3, but still no sign of either music or backdrops.
Despite not having the slightest clue what I'm doing in terms of scripts, I then tried editing the relevant part of /home/pi/RetroPie-Extra/scriptmodules/ports/heboris.sh to add a line about res, thus:
function configure_heboris() { local script="$md_inst/$md_id.sh" chown pi:pi "$md_inst/heboris" moveConfigDir "$md_inst/config" "$md_conf_root/$md_id/config" moveConfigDir "$md_inst/replay" "$md_conf_root/$md_id/replay" moveConfigDir "$md_inst/res" "$md_conf_root/$md_id/res"
but that had no apparent effect. There was still no shortcut to res in /opt/retropie/ports/heboris.
Then I worked out that was the wrong script file, and did the same edit to /home/pi/RetroPie-Setup/ext/RetroPie-Extra/scriptmodules/ports/heboris.sh, deleted and reinstalled again. Now I do have the shortcut, but the music and backgrounds still don't appear in the game. I'm stumped :(

ill take all the help to get more people to find this. :)
Sure i would love to make something with you
I was thinking something along the same line. this post was kinda a start for it.there is so much good stuff out there and alot of it get lost in the forum
Nice to hear. So I was thinking about hosting a markdown document somewhere. That way we don't have to worry too much about formatting.
I think very important here is the structure. It is very easy to just put stuff in the document, but another thing to make it easily navigatable and understandable.Happy to assist with this, I too have a pretty extensive document for my own use, written in simple terms so that even clueless dumdums like me can follow it.
-
@sleve_mcdichael applied the update
-
@JimmyFromTheBay said in Suggestions for ports #2:
There are definitely no MP3s or background images installed with the game.
Not that it matters now, since i just merged the update from @sleve_mcdichael, but yes both the MP3s and PNGs are in the folders they need to be, or in the folders that the scripts put them in since on my system they are sitting where they should be from what the old script put them
those are all the files that are included when the game installsnot sure why yours didn't have them, since we both used the same script..
with that being said. try the new script and let @sleve_mcdichael know how it works
-
So I uninstalled Heboris (which was playing perfectly, just silently) completely, deleted both of the heboris.sh scripts, quit to the commandline, typed cd RetroPie-Extra and ran ./update-extras.sh, restored Heboris to the selected installs list, rebooted EmulationStation, installed Heboris again from RetroPie-Setup and rebooted again.
GOOD NEWS: all the MP3 and PNG files are now present and correct in the right folders.
BAD NEWS: the game no longer runs at all, freezing on a black screen necessitating a power-off.

That's what I get for pushing changes without testing first.
-
I forgot a
$
-
I tried to use
moveConfigDir
on a file, not a directory -
I neglected that
moveConfigDir
andmoveConfigFile
do not work like a regularmv
; they do need the actual filename in the destination and not just the dir to move them to, i.e.mv bar foo/bar
, and not justmv bar foo
.
This should fix it up. I have tested this and it is working on my end, including custom music by replacing the files in
/opt/retropie/configs/ports/heboris/res/bgm
with my own tracks, renamed following the convention (seebgm.txt
in that folder for details -- you do have to change music to MP3 in the in-game "settings"):https://github.com/Exarkuniv/RetroPie-Extra/pull/97
@JimmyFromTheBay (edit: fix is published, just update your extras.)
if you get here before EK pushes the fix, you can download this file from my fork and replace the one in yourRetroPie-Setup
directory as you've done before at the end of this post.Despite not having the slightest clue what I'm doing in terms of scripts, I then tried
Best way to learn, in my opinion. You can almost always undo whatever you've done and if not, you've got backups right?
