Low vertical frame rate in emulation station.

Hi all,
I’ve recently built a vertical bartop and paired it with a Pi3b+. Everything is working flawlessly in horizontal mode with a solid 60fps, but when I edit the config file to display_rotate=1 EmulationStation drops to 21 fps after a reboot. Has anyone else had this problem, and if so is there a fix?

Using
display_rotateneeds more GPU memory and usually has a performance impact.
What's your resolution ? What version of RetroPie are you using ?
