lrMame4all emulator does not pickup my controll settings

It took me a while to get my head round the retroarch.cfg file setup whilst using an IPAC4 with my custom made arcade controls on my Pi3
So the issue I have now is that I finally got roms to work using the lrMame4all emulator but my controls do not work as they do like on my SNES. I manually edited the retroarch.cfg for all 4 players in the ALL folder expecting this file to cascade my controls to all the emulators but this is not the case for lrMame4all. So my controls are spot on for SNES, NES Megadrive etc but for lrMame4all they do not mimic the other emulators
Do I have to change the controls via the tab button rgui whilst on the mame emulator ?
Does this make a permanent save so that I don't have to redo these changes every time ?
will making changes via RGUI overwrite my other emulator controller settings ?
Or is there a file within lrMame4all that I can edit with my controller settings such retroarch.cfg ?Thanks all
