Configure controller / gamepad for non libreto ports & emulators (Quake III Arena)

Pi Model: 3B
RetroPie Version Used: 3.8.1
Built From: SD Image
USB Devices connected: Xbox 360 Wireless Adapter, PS3 controller cable
Controller used: Xbox 360 Wireless, PS3 USB
Emulator: Quake III Arena port, Mame4all-Pi (non-libreto ports and emulators)Hello!
I would like to play the Quake III Arena port using a gamepad, but I don't know how to configure it.The gamepad is already working (I followed the video for the 360 controller at the Wiki), but I believe it works only with libreto emulators and ports. It works with Quake and lr-imame4all but not with Quake III Arena or Mame4all-Pi.
Could you tell me how to configure it? I'm using WinSCP so I'm looking forward to edit all the files you tell me! :)
Thanks

In the Wiki there is an explanation on how to configure the XBox360 controller. Further below there is some instruction on how to create alternate configurations (https://github.com/retropie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/Setting-up-the-XBox360-controller#alternate-controller-configurations), which can be switched using the button in the middle. This also includes mouse emulation and thing like that. To use those instructions you have to make sure, that you are using the xboxdrv driver (afaik this instruction is not for the xpad driver). But the xboxdrv driver doesn't work with retropi 4.0 and I think it also doesn't work with the 3.8.1 version, but should work before.
Once you have the correct version and the xboxdrv running with the configuration as explained in the wiki, I think you have to experiment with the settings to get something which works good for Quake III Arena.I would also be interested in a running configuration, so it would be cool if you can share your intermediate steps and results.

Has someone in the past 4 year found a solution to enable joystick/gamepad input on ioquake/ioq3 using RetroPie? It should be fairly simple as SDL natively supports these kind of controllers, but somehow I've failed miserably in getting it to work with my Logitech F710 gamepad(s).
Contributions to the project are always appreciated, so if you would like to support us with a donation you can do so here.
