Got Raspberry pi 3 for son to get started, need suggestions

The wiki is perfect for all the written basics. If you're interested in some video tutorials, all the Floob and ETAprime examples helped any time I hit a roadblock. Well versed and step by step for young and old alike.

dbdmora I must commend you on getting your son this cool little gadget!
This will help their problem-solving and eventually, later in life, any computer experience (be it Linux or logical thinking) will surely help!
Just be sure to stick to "well known methods/hardware" to minimize frustration (such as PS3 controllers seem to work best, especially when wired, etc).
Out of the box RetroPie is pretty easy to run but getting into the console for the first time can be daunting but opens up a world of possibilities.
If your son also enjoys the gaming aspect be sure to get 2 SD cards, one with a working system (which you backup on a regular basis to make sure the save files are stored!) and one to experiment with.
Testing out new themes, settings, etc can be a lot of trial and error but tuning them is something I find very fun but an 11 year old might be prone to simpeler mistakes and always having a working hard copy for the actual games might be a good idea.Perhaps storing roms/save files on a separate device (USB stick, etc) might also be helpful to make switching between stable and experimental much swifter and easier.
And, of course, feel free to ask for any help needed to make this experience an amazing one. It is also a good place to learn how to formulate questions properly as the community here is generally very very helpful and patient. Documenting such things is also a very good experience for a young one.
<oldfart>Oh how old I feel and how much I wish I had these tools back in the day! </oldfart>

I'd also suggest watching some Python tutorials to get more into the technical side of things. You can do some cool stuff with it!

@dbdmora There are plenty of guides for setting up RetroPie, even some good videos on YOUTUBE. I also always suggest this to people who are new Pi owners: http://camjam.me/?page_id=1035

Re: [Got Raspberry pi 3 for son to get started](need suggestions)
Thanks everyone. My son got his RetroPie working. I had to hardly help him as he was reading and watching the youtube videos. Just this past weekend we downloaded most NES, SNES, and N64 games. We currently are using a Ps4 Controller and we were playing SF2 Turbo and the buttons seem to lag when pressing them. Any thoughts on this? I ordered some USB SNES controllers to get the retro feel. Will the SNES controllers I ordered also work with N64 games as the controller is so different?
My son also wants to get Kodi on it, since I have a server on my PC, he can stream his kids movies in his playroom. Is there a tutorial how to load kodi or retro pie on startup? Thanks

Wow that is kind of awesome!
First for the latency issue be sure to check the TV settings for "Movie/TV/Gaming/etc" sort of settings.
A lot of modern TV have post processing which "enhanced" a picture but adds a slight delay, which is not noticeable for movies but is in gaming.
I ran into this myself a couple of times. As far as Kodi is concerned you can install it from the RetroPie-Setup script and even make it to boot straight into Kodi and only into Emulation Station when Kodi is shut down.
It's not hard to find, but I do not have a Pi ready to check out exactly where the option is set. Perhaps another kind soul can inform you?
Anyways: still great to hear it is all working out so well for you guys! Be sure to ask for any help needed!

Oh and yes your SNES controller will work with the N64 emulator but you will be lacking buttons/analog stick so it might not be the best choice.

Out of curiosity, what is the best method to book straight to Kodi?
