Cannot access RetroPie setup menu

I haven’t used my retro pie set up in over a year or two. I played some games and decided to install a couple more. Went to scrape them through the setup menu and I can’t get into it through Emulation Station or through the command line. Here is what I’m getting:

Looks like you have updated the RetroPie-Setup script, but your system is no longer compatible with the new version. Which version of RetroPie setup did you have installed and how did you install it ?
-
@mitu I’m not sure? I just went on the retropie website a few years back and did the download from there. Used “etcher” to format the sd card then put retropie on it. How can I find that info for you?
-
Normally you'd be able to see it in RetroPie-Setup, in the dialog title. Regardless, the Raspbian version used by your initial install is no longer supported by RetroPie, that's where the errors come from.
You can re-install using a more recent version (backing up your games first and restoring them after, see https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Updating-RetroPie/#backup-option-2). -
@mitu I backup up using applepi baker. Downloaded and Installed the newer retropie buster 4.7.1 using balenaEtcher. Then Tried restoring through applepi baker, my old img, and I’m getting errors. Not sure what I’m doing wrong?

@arcadejacob, when you used "ApplePi Baker" to "restore" your old .img, you wiped out your freshly imaged Buster 4.7.1 of RetroPie. Essentially, you just "restored" your old .img over it. Restoring an "img" is just like "cloning," It will be an exact copy of what you imaged.
What you need to do is "copy" your roms folder to some location on your computer/network, etc from your "old" install of RetroPie. Once that is done, then image Buster 4.7.1 onto your SD Card, get that all setup accordingly, then copy your roms folder back onto it, thus "restoring" all of your games, etc. That is what @mitu meant by "backing up" up your games.
Additionally, you don't need balenaEtcher if you are already using ApplePi Baker. In addition to backing/creating an img of your card/hd, it can also image it just like balenaEtcher.

@cdaters ohhhhhh, I didn’t know it was that easy, haha. So I can copy over all configs and splash screens the same way? Thanks guys!
-
@arcadejacob Yes, and don't forget any themes you have installed in
/etc/emulationstation/themes/
etc. that you may have "custom" installed, etc. -
@mitu This is just what I was looking for. I performed an update within retropie config and got the same result. couldn't access any setup menu. copying the ROMs and Bios over, but a couple of BIN files wouldn't copy (admin permission required). I guess after I reflash the SD card, this won't be a problem putting all my ROMs back?
