Raspberry Pis are not available, and probably won't be until 2023. Best alternative.

I want to make a dedicated RetroPie gaming appliance for my young kids, and finding a Pi that hasn't been scalped is practically impossible. The current Pis in our house are all spoken for, so what are my options for alternative hardware that will run RetroPie (since that's the interface to which they're accustomed).

@tribunal88 find an old cheap desktop computer or Amazon has some small form factor pcs for around a couple hundred US dollars. Unless you're really looking for the super small form factor of a pi. But You don’t need the greatest and best pc for most these games and will run more then what a pi can do like pretty much perfect n64, maybe some GameCube and wii. Psp will be tons better, ect .

True, but for a "couple hundred dollars" I can get a scalped Pi 4. Also, yes, the size is also something that I'd like to keep.

@tribunal88 I feel your pain and the amount of time Raspberry Pi's have been out of stock is bloody ludicrous. I used to have a spare Pi 4 and 3 in case of emergencies. Back in them days a Pi 4 was only £45! In terms of alternatives I'm not sure. I know you can get Playstation Mini's with Retroarch on them to play lots of stuff. I've heard of things like the Orange/Banana Pi but they don't have this great community behind them like Raspberry Pi does. C2 Odroid is another one. I wish you luck sir

@tribunal88 If you can get a child-friendly frontend like Emulationstation working with retroarch on an android device like a firestick then that might work. Then you'll need a splitter to add more storage and a bluetooth controller. Maybe with a powered hub you can use wired controllers.

I've only tried bare retroarch with a bt controller on my firestick in the past but I didn't like the scaling bugs it had with crt shaders. Maybe that's been fixed but I have no interest to use it for gaming.

I lucked out and happened to be online when a robotics/hobbyist store in the UK got some 2GB models in stock. It's headed across the pond. Hat tip to rpilocator's real-time alerting system.
