Bolo w/ joystick on RetroPie Apple II emulator?
-
Has anyone managed to get Bolo on the Apple II emulator to play with a joystick? It supposedly supports one but I can't get it to work. All the other Apple II games I've tried seem to work OK with my XBox controller.
I remember playing Bolo a lot as a kid with a joystick and I wanted to play it again - but it's not as much fun on keyboard...
Thanks!

Such a good game, right? Assuming your joystick is properly configured, just follow these steps:
- Enter new "Level" and "Density" as required
- After "Generating Maze" you'll be in gameplay
- With a keyboard press Ctrl-J"
Joystick control should now be working. You'll need to do this with each session of the game.
It always made me a little sad that so many games require a keyboard press or chord of presses to enable the joystick. :)
Have fun!

@roslof Thank you for the reply. I finally got a chance to try this today, but it did not work. Are you sure it works for you? What kind of controller are you using? Any other ideas of what I might try?
Now I am wondering if I am misremembering and I always had to play this with a keyboard. I kind of remember it being a little frustrating...

This does work for me. I'm using a DualShock 4, but that shouldn't really matter much, since the Apple ][ just needs analog + 2 buttons.
Which emulator are you using? linapple? Can you post your joystick configuration for the emulator?
Here is my linapple configuration:
# Default values are 2 for Joystick 0, and 0 for Joystick 1 Joystick 0 = 1 Joystick 1 = 1 # For Joysticks you can define which Joystick index number, axis number, and buttons. # # Default for Joystick 1 is index 0, axis 0 and 1, buttons 0 and 1. # Default for Joystick 2 is index 1, axis 0 and 1, button 0. Joy0Index = 0 Joy0Axis0 = 0 Joy0Axis1 = 1 Joy0Button1 = 3 #Cross Button on P1 DualShock 4 Joy0Button2 = 0 #Square Button on P1 DualShock 4 Joy1Index = 1 Joy1Axis0 = 0 Joy1Axis1 = 1 Joy1Button1 = 3 #Cross Button on P2 DualShock 4 Joy1Button2 = 0 #Square Button on P2 DualShock 4
Also, to ensure we're comparing apples to apples (no pun intended) I'm using "Bolo (4am crack)". 4am creates perfect clean cracks and this version works perfectly. Can't speak re: other images.

@roslof Ah OK, that was it! My version was just called "Bolo" and the crack was by Trystan II. Seemed to work fine except for the the joystick. When I tried the 4AM crack, it worked!
Thanks!
