I have a PC converted to Retropie running on Xubuntu, and I have a speaker routed through the headphone Jack on the motherboard. When trying to turn up the volume on the audio menu, the slider reverts back to 0 when reopened. When attempting to launch Retropie setup, a snippet of backend code became visible:

VolumeControl::init() - Failed to find mixer elements!
VolumeControl::getVolume() - Failed to get volume range!

This repeats itself twice. What am I doing wrong that is causing this issue? I’m running version 4.7.18 on Ubuntu 21.04

Can you run, from a terminal, the following commands:

        aplay -l
        aplay -L

and post the output ? The error in EmulationStation logs indicated the audio settings for the volume control are not correct. Do you have sound during gameplay, when running the emulators ?
