lr-mame2016 Questions
-
I'm setting up RetroPie on an ODROID-XU4 and I have run into some questions.
-
When RetroPie and lr-mame2016 are launched, do they run under root privileges or under limited user? I'm trying to figure out directory permissions that are needed.
-
I have installed lr-mame2016 but I only see the mame2003 directory under roms. Is that correct or will the lr-mame2016 roms have their own directory under roms?
-
I will be keeping my roms on a USB stick. Can I just mount the USB stick at the root of the roms directory for lr-mame2016?
Thanks in advance!

The
root
is used only for the setup script, since it needs permission to install/update the system. Anything related to emulation/running games is run as the install user. You shouldn't use theroot
user for normal RetroPie operations (including launching games/emulators). Any rom/configuration folders should be owned and writable by the install user.I have installed lr-mame2016 but I only see the mame2003 directory under roms. Not quite, there's no top
mame2003
folder underroms
. It may be amame2003
sub-folder in one of the arcade ROMs folders, but that's created by the emulator. See the MAME doc page for the list of supported (top) MAME rom folders.I will be keeping my roms on a USB stick. Can I just mount the USB stick at the root of the roms directory for lr-mame2016?
Yes, you can do that - see the Documentation.

@mitu Thanks for all of the great information!
My ask abot root was that since the user under which RetroPie is run has been set to have no password, I was not sure if it was launched with sudo or not. But as I think about it, why create a user if it's going to run as root, why bother creating a user!
I messed up on the mame2003 directory it is under lr-mame so I was lead to believe that the mame-libretro was a generic folder for all MAME variants. I'll look at it more closely.
As for the USB stick, thing. I have no idea how my Googling didn't turn up that documentation page! (I guess my Google fu needs leveling up!)

It is. If you have roms in that folder and several libretro Mames installed, you can press A when launching a game to choose which of your Mames should launch that rom (or set ot as default for everything in the folder). That said, I don't know from memory if Mame2016 is a libretro core.
