Joystick through GPIO
-
I was recently researching the Super Game Pi by the Ruiz Brothers at Adafruit (https://learn.adafruit.com/super-game-pi) and noticed that they used a standard two-axis joystick along with a cupcade adapter PCB to connect a joystick to the Pi for RetroPie. This PCB is no longer available, so is there a way to connect the joystick directly to the Pi, or do I need a different board? If so, what is it?

You can't connect the joystick directly to the PI's GPIOs, you need an ADC chip in-between.
Take a look at https://grantwinney.com/connecting-an-analog-joystick-to-the-raspberry-pi-and-using-it-with-an-rgb-led-to-simulate-a-color-wheel/, which uses an MCP 3008 to connect a joystick to the PI.
