Getting Retropi to work

I installed Retropi 4 onto my computer all I get is Retropie loads when I start my computer but I have no way or time to be able to open up the software.
How do I actually open this emulator software?
It seems to be made by Arch .
Do I need a controller to run or work this?
Do I need to have it running on like separate operation system on a different operation system to my first operation system?
