Double Dragon is treating my Player 2 start button as "Coin insert", and won't let a second player join

1943 works fine with both players

Both use lr-mame2003, so I don't understand why 1943 works but DoubleDragon doesn't?

I'm using a Raspberry Pi 3 with an official RPi PSU.
I have an Ultimarc JPAC adapter going into the USB port
      I'm running RetroPie v4.8 retropie-buster-4.8-rpi2_3_zero2w
The JPAC is controlling 2 joysticks with 4 buttons each (ABXY). I have 4 additional buttons assigned to select, start, null, and hotkey in RetroPie), and a single coin
      mechanism.

I'm assuming "port 2" refers to Player 2's controls for this game, even though both controllers are being fed into a single JPAC adaptor?

When playing DD, I go into RetroArch’s config menu in game, I make sure auto save config is set, then I make sure all the keys for port 2 are set to the correct buttons and joystick positions. Then I quit and reopen the game, but the player 2 controls still don’t work.

      Any suggestions?

It's not clear to me how to correctly configure player 2 for a specific game.

@bluecoffee MAME cores have 2 layers of setup for controls, one in retroarch's Quick Menu > Controls, the other in MAME's OSD, i'd suppose one of those layers is misconfigured.

If you can't figure this out, i'd recommend using FBNeo, which has everything in 1 layer.

@barbudreadmon thank you, I’ll check that. Forgive my ignorance but how would I tell a single rom to use FBNeo?

You can use the runcommand launch menu to choose which emulator runs a rom.
