Old PC - suitable for RetroPie? AMD Phenom II X4 955 (2009)
-
Hi,
I have an RPI4 and an old PC laying around.
I use the RPI4 with Lakka on an SD. I plug in an external HDD with roms. I've had a mixed experience with Lakka and have considered giving RetroPie a go.
Would it be worthwhile installing RetroPie onto the PC to use as a dedicated machine for this? Or would the RPI4 be the better option peformance wise?
I had built it around 2009, it uses a AMD Phenom II X4 955.
It doesn't have a graphics card currently, only onboard graphics.
(I could get a GFX card for it)
2 x 2TB hard drives.I have tried to find comparisons between the AMD processor and RPI4 but can't really make sense of it.
It seems a waste to throw it away if it could be repurposed instead for something like this.
Thank you kindly for any assistance

@Raks1981 Hi, I installed it on a AMD athlon64 from 2004. You can install it without problem on your Computer, but first you have to install Ubuntu on your PC, then you can install RetroPie. There is a guide here: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Debian/

How is the performance on your system? Can you run most things?
Thank you

@Raks1981 I'm happy to help you 😃
Yes, I can play every psx, nintendo 64, gameboy, master system and arcade (mame) games very smoothly. Recently I added a graphic card and i also can play ps2 games.
